A brief summary of what’s going on in my life at this moment:
- Still feeling high off of the new superpowers I’ve gotten after my sleep apnea surgery. It’s a period of significant change for me, and I’m taking advantage of the novelty to build new routines focused on fitness, learning, hobbies, trying new activities, and meeting interesting people. I feel like I’m living a brand new life, and I’m going to do my best to make the most of it
- Working full-time as a software engineering intern at LUMIQ, mostly revolving around backend API development with some devops tooling sprinkled in. The work is fun and the environment is really conducive to learning, which I’m really grateful for.
- I’m dabbling in a lot of fields right now, but I would broadly categorize my interests in 3 fields:
1. Health sciences and metacognition: After living with what was basically a disability for so long, I’m really interested in optimizing my mental and physical performance, and learning as much as I can about how our bodies tick. I’m experimenting with things like diet, sleep, exercise, mindfulness, productivity systems, and really trying to integrate what I learn into a holistic practice which I can sustain and share with others. I’m realizing that there are a lot of factors in modern society that are severely detrimental to health – not only to ourselves as individuals, but also our communities and ecosystems – and I really want to do something about that.
2. DIY: I’ve always had a penchant for tinkering – taking things apart and messing around with the internals to really understand how something works. Unfortunately I could never come around to finishing any DIY projects in the past, but that’s all changed now. Some DIY hobbies of mine include building mechanical keyboards, home repairs and refurbishing old items. I think there’s a joy in creating something with your own two hands that can’t be replicated any other way, and I want to experience more of that.
3. Programming: In many ways, I actually see programming and software development as the logical embodiment of DIY. Those who build software are always looking under the hood, trying to understand what goes on behind abstractions and interfaces, breaking things down into individual components in order to create something new. I have a few project ideas in the pipeline, and hopefully the next time you read this, it’ll be on a self-hosted website.
